I'm very glad to say that at last someone at the club has started taking pictures of the action!!!

As you may know when my work pattern changed last year I was left with only 1 Saturday off in 3 and it's pretty hard to tell the wife you are going to spend it down at the club playing with little men (sad face)

Thankfully it doesn't matter now as a new lad Cameron has appeared full of enthusiasm and also pretty handy with a camera.

Naps 14.1.12

It has been a good long while since our last update basically because I haven't been to the club because of work. I dropped down last Saturday and managed to take some pics of a couple of games.

1st up David P, John M, JP and Des played out an 1813 Naps game.

JP's Prussians where defending.

Against the massed hordes of French infantry.

For once John M had his good dice with him and things were looking good for the French.

We men taking their orders from the magic hand.

Pretty soon the French battalions were knocking on the Prussians doors asking for beer and sausages.

The Prussians refused so the Frenchies decided to take it by force.

I believe this was the 1st outing for the Davids newly finished young guard?

And they took full advantage of the weakened Prussians and smashed right through them.

In the end a total victory for the French smashing all before them.

Battle for the Walls 10.9.11

Been too busy at work to post updates so this is 1 from a few weeks ago.

Young David and Martin fought out a cracking looking LotRings battle

David was in charge of the evil forces intent on getting over or through the walls to the man flesh beyond.

The David's LotRings armies continue to grow if at a slow pace compared to the rest of their armies but they are still very impressive.

I'm not sure of the spelling (and I am too tired to look it up) but the haridin are all recent additions to their army and make a nice change to the abominations of orks and goblins etc in the evil ranks.

The bad guys move into the walls hoping to scale them and kill all within.

All of the walls, building s etc come from the David's collection. Some still to be finished off

The big guns are brought up. The trolls in LotR's are similar to the tiger tank in WW2, heavy, slow and not that many around but do a lot of damage when given the chance.

Things are starting to look pretty bad for the forces of good. The Riders of Rohan have stormed forward to try and stem the tide.

It's too late, the big guys are in and nothing's going to stop them!!!

The last of the Rohanians have turned and fled and the baddies will eat who is left around. In the end a win for the forces of evil. Well laid out game guys, you should be proud of yourselves. Martin painted a good amount of the figures on show too!!!!

The Ugly Club 10.9.11

I managed to make it down to the club this week for the 1st time in a very, very long time and it was good to see a reasonable turn out at the club (12).

This was 1 of 3 games on the go on Saturday (Skaven and Ogres I believe?).

Stewart and Jonathan set up a nice looking battlefield with plenty of cool looking beasts plus what looks to be lots of future painting for J!

Yet another of the Skaven killing machines.

Not sure what the cards are for in the game? Is this a new thing guys?

This has to be a contender for the ugliest Warhammer Fantasy beast I have ever seen! It reminds me of something from a James Herbert book I read as a kid. Can't wait to see this baby painted!!!

JP and Stuart fought out a Warhammer Fantasy battle a few weeks ago and I forgot I had taken these.

My shift pattern changes on 14th May so this will pretty much be my last post as I will only have every 3rd Saturday off and I no doubt will be spending that with the good lady.

Again if anyone wants to send me pics of some club games get snapping.

ACW 15mm 16.4.11

Sorry for the lack of posts guys. Other than the past couple of weeks I haven't been able to attend the club due to real life commitments and with my appeal for photo's of games falling on deaf ears (no surprise there then) I have been unable to do any reports. Thankfully I managed to get some pics of this Saturdays games. Also there was a new lad (Craig) who seems keen on taking some pics when I am not around and sending them onto me. Fingers crossed all goes well and I can manage to maintain the blog.

David P was due to play JP and John M at ACW this week. Somehow JP was magicked away into a world of fantasy by Stuart so David P and John M were left to fight it out alone. Like most weeks at the club however some budding disciples began to arrive to fill the gaps.

First the D man arrived fresh from his move back home to be with his fellow CWC buddies. He has been keeping his move on the down low but I had my suspicions as he kept on arriving with more and more lead soldiers each week, secretly depositing them in and around the local area!!!

(I have some of his 15mm ancients stashed in my spare room).

Then Jon B casually strolled in at 12.50pm (10 minutes earlier than usual!)

The 4 amigos, it's amazing how small the table looks next to real people (Jon B that's not a dig at you big lad!)

So the guys set up a scenario with the Union defending against a large rebel force and I believe the guys were rolling to see when their reinforcements returned.

In Johnny Reb II this is usually a very scary sight, a Union 3 gun battery and infantry holding the fence line against an approaching mass of troop. Those 3 gun Union batteries can be pretty devastating!

I believe all the troops on the table are from my brother David's 15mm ACW collection.

The French manage to turn the Prussian flank (sorry wrong blog). The Rebs manage to sneak round the Union flank. Usually a major problem in JR II!

The D-mans favourite figures of the day.

So in the end a Reb victory was declared. I wasn't paying much attention to the game but it did sound fun with lots of laughter and name calling. A usual Saturday afternoon down at the club. So I believe the centre is closed next Saturday I will find out from Stuart what dates the club will be open through the next few weeks.

Hello all, Sorry for the lack of posts. I am having a hard time getting down to the club because of work and life commitments. The club was on last Saturday and 6 of us managed a game of Napoleonics and you can see the results here: http://napoleonicsinminiature.blogspot.com/2011/03/naps-19311-part1.html I believe there were 2 games on the go yesterday with a pretty impressive 15mm ACW battle with trench layout defended by the Rebs with a huge Union army assaulting. Also Stuart and Jonathan fought out a Warhammer Fantasy game. There was a good turn out with a few visitors too. Napoleonic 15.1.11 part1

Ahhhhh, what a day, WHAT A DAY!!!! It's been a long while since we last got a chance to have a game of Naps and today was just brilliant. DC and myself had talked last Saturday about having a 2nd battle of Polotsk 1812 type game with a joint Bavarian and French force attempting to hold back a superior Russian force.

I got in contact with Robert earlier in the week and he decided to join us for the day, so the 3 of us were all set. As the week went on we managed to pick up my brother David and then JP text me late last night to see if he and the D-man (travelling from the highlands) could join us.

D tried to fool us into thinking that he was taking his wife down to visit her sister but we all knew he was just looking for an excuse to get down to the club!

It turned out we had much less Bavarians between us than was 1st thought so it was pretty much a French and Russian stand up fight with my single Bavarian battalion getting their 1st outing along side the French (Answers on a postcard if you can guess what happened next?).

Des, JP and David P (my bro) were playing the evil French and the glorious Russian forces fighting for all that is good and just in the world were being played my Robert, DC (I think playing Russians for the 1st time) and myself.

So both camps disappeared to sort out a plan for the battle. Knowing that David and JP are very aggressive players (west of Scotland mentality) we decided to have the 12pdr battery facing right at them both with the bulk of the army in support.

True to form JP and David P went straight for the jugular with the main French force coming down the centre left and centre with Des also pressing myself hard with 2 large cuirassier regiments hoofing it towards my guns (shades of the light brigade at Balaclava?).

Our Russian artillery soon began to make it's presence felt taking a heavy toll of the advancing French columns.

I was out on the left with 2 Hussars regiments and an infantry brigade trying to pin down Desmondo. My 2 Hussar regiments forced D's young guard into square but through the woods his Bavarians and old guard kept coming. It would appear that Des is an aggressive player too!

Des declared a charge on my horse battery and DC declared an opportunity charge with the the Russian cuirassiers to block them.

Like looking down the barrel of a gun the Russian cuirassiers eye up their French cuirassier enemy across the field.

Warhammer Fantasy 15.1.11

The Marshall announced last week that he thought it was about time he tried a Warhammer Fantasy battle again, just to see how the rules had changed over the years and the effect they would have on his Empire army.

I remembered him mentioning that he had played it a great deal when his son and heir was still a lad but I thought all the stuff was well gone.

So in comes JM with a really excellent looking Empire army (is that right?). I have always been a sucker for knights and crossbows etc and these are really cool.

Young Jonathan fielded his High Elves for the encounter and it would appear the years have not been kind to the Empire army.

Look at these, they are absolutely lovely.

It's always good to see what people have hidden away in their cupboards and lofts!

Even young Martin had a go. The Marshall pre-warned me that he didn't want to see that his lad was a much better player than him plastered over the club blog! (as if I would!). However what I will say is he is much jammier than his dad!!! Obviously he is still on that youthful crest of a wave when every other roll is a 6!

My favourite in the army. I have no idea who this guy is but he looks really cool. So the Marshall recons he would need a dragon and some other magical type things (not really sure as I have no idea on fantasy) for it to stand any chance against the armies doing the rounds at the moment.

So by my reckoning we now have 6 Fantasy Warhammer players around the club with a good few armies and at least 1 more getting put together. The Bugster and Jonathan have High Elves (and Jonathan has started Skaven?), Stuart has Daemons (and I think Tomb Skeleton type guys), JP has Vampire counts (and Chaos?) and the Marshall has these guys. I think the club also has an Ogre/Orc army? So quite a collection all in!

Another Lord of the Rings by Martin and David this week

I am glad to say that Martin got out the sand and started to finish the edges of his movement trays. I am officially impressed!!!

I was so involved with our Napoleonic battle that I didn't take many pictures of the other battles in the room.

I think Martin won the day but I can't remember who was good and who was evil?

Imperial Face Off 8.1.11

So we had a great turn out on Saturday for the 1st club day of 2011. We had 4 games on the go with 9 players and 3 guests (I was a guest as I had just received a massive box of figures in the post from a swap, Whaaahooo!!! and wanted to trawl through it). Anyway back to the Action.

Now this is 1 for the watching as Simon and Jonathan have both embarked on new 40K armies (Simon is collecting Salamanders and Jonathan is going for Space Wolves). So I am really looking forward to seeing their armies take shape.

It's good to see some more 40K action at the club. This is the 1st of Jonathan's wolves primed ready for painting. I think the space wolves are 1 of the coolest chapters but also have 1 of the trickiest paint schemes. Jonathan I wish you well young wolf warrior!

These are some mighting machines, I was standing a little too close and I swear I could feel the engine heat off them! Honest ;-)

Looks like the Salamanders are taking the fight to the wolves. Some terminators advance on Jonathan's Land Raider with covering fire from their own big beast.

And in they go ready for the kill.

Again I have no idea who won?

Lord of the Rings 8.1.11

Young David and Martin were a bit miffed that I hadn't shown enough of their games. I think they were planning to take me outside and sort me out?.

As they are both 17 now and tall lads I thought I better post some more pics to ease the tension. If you look down the links lads you will see I posted the battle report from before Christmas.

Unfortunately these are the only pictures that turned out clear enough to post (ha!). So here they are Martin's Riders of Rohan riding down my nephew David's ugly wuglies.

And the big fickt in the centre with the forces of good (if that is what they really are?) starting to get the upper hand.

Lads if you take the time to sand, PVA and paint your movement bases I will definitely take more photo's of your figures (even close ups). I was even thinking of taking your bases up the road David and putting them out of their misery. I could hear the bases crying out, please finish me off! Pleaasseeee!!!!

Dark Fantasy 8.1.11

Stuart and JP dusted down their armies (and spell book, you know sometimes I'm sitting at the club and I tune into the guys playing Fantasy and I think I'm on another planet!) and went for a game of Fantasy for the day. Sorry about the photo quality, I'll have to try and remember my settings all over again!

Another 1st showing for the club blog. JP brought his (chaos?) army out of mothballs and set out to defeat Stuarts Daemon masses.

Now these look something special. I do believe the evil figures for the Warhammer Fantasy armies are the coolest of them all.

I was a little cautious approaching this lady as she looks a lot like an ex-girlfriend of mine! (that's why the photo is out of focus) This is a new figure Stuart finished off for his daemon army.

Stuart your figure painting and army is looking the business!

From this picture you would think that JP's chaos army was beginning to get the better of Stuarts red devils but not so. In the end it was a victory for the army from hell. I believe this was JP's 1st foray into Fantasy for a good while.

Great to see Jamie D made it down to the club Saturday and looks to be catching the wargaming bug again.

ACW 8.1.11

Another cool looking 15mm ACW game on the go this week.

David P and DC played the Rebs and they were in attack.

John M was the Union awaiting the grey tide.

Unfortunately John M's rolling wasn't taking the numbers off the Union ranks as he would have hoped.

The Union held their line doggedly.

However in the end the Rebels force was just too great and they took the field.

Lord of the Rings 12.10

1st post of the new year and some pictures I didn't get the chance to post last year.

Young Martin and David put on another excellent looking Lord of the Rings game using the latest Return of the King rule set.

Sorry I don't have the time for small stories at the moment so mostly I'll let the figures tell the story.

CWC Club News 5.1.11

A Happy New Year to everyone and all the best for 2011!!!!!

It is now time to dust off your old armies or display your newly painted Christmas present type armies as the club reopens this Saturday 8th January 2011

To get you in the mood here are some pictures from the games played on the last Saturday of 2010.

As mentioned before Martin and David fought out a Lord of the Rings battle.

And John, M, David P and JP fought out an ACW in 15mm battle.

Now I was present that last Saturday and I listened to John M and David P extracting the Michael from JP all game and watched JP's Rebel artillery take a pounding and to me it looked as though the Union forces were dominating the battlefield so when I left early I naturally thought that Johnny Reb took a pasting.

Apparently not so as after talking with David on the phone it appears that JP's armies broke the Union centre and a southern victory was declared!!!

So I stand shocked, amazed and impressed!!!

Anyway if you have any thought on a game for Saturday email, pick up the phone or let out a shout. I will be down Saturday and so will David and David P jnr.

We had a good turnout for the last club Saturday of the year with 2 games on the go, 5 players and 3 visitors and everything was done in good spirit.

So wanted to sign out the year by wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!

Fantasy 11.12.10

The 2 armies faced up (I am sure some of those white cloaks may well have turned just a little bit chocolate coloured at this point?).

The forces of good stand their ground as the evil troops eat away at them.

I think in the end the forces of good won the day but there is always next week!!!

So that's the last of the updates from last Saturday. This Saturday coming will be the last club day before the Festive break so hopefully we will have a good turn out.

Sassanids and Romans 2

The 2nd battle saw David up against Robert (who dropped in on his way down for a paper).

Again I have no idea who won the battle?

David's Sassanid army is pretty much all cavalry.

There were 2 DBM games played by the end of Saturday both with the same figures.

The 1st game was David P snr and Jon B as the Sassanids. You can pretty much work out what the 2 elephant crews are saying to each other.

"what's going on down there? don't know some sort of big battle, don't fancy that much, me neither, lets crack open some beers and watch and lets try to look like trees, good idea, ohh look at me I'm a tree! ".

The guys haven't been doing points battles so it's been a case of put down on the table what you have painted.

Salamanders and Tyranids

This week David, Martin and Simon had planned on a points games for 40K. I believe this is the 1st 40K points game David and Martin have played at the club? So a new beginning and it certainly looked the part

Finally moving away from the darkest spot in the room younDavid and Martin decided to set up on the darkest sheet in the room ;-)

Simon was playing the Salamanders and has been building his force up from scratch so we should be seeing loads of newly painted Spacemarines over the coming months.

The Tyranid force this week came from David P snr and jnrs collection.

Some Salamanders in a bit of trouble here.

WW2 in 10mm Practice

John M and myself had a little mess about with ww2 on Saturday to give me an idea of the rules

A simple affair starting out with a single tank each working up to a few shermans taking on a panther.

Finishing off with a bit of fun as a load of shermans trying to get in close and do some damage to a Tiger II.

It was interesting to see how it all played out and for a 40 year old set of rules it worked really well.

The tanks are from Pendraken's 10mm ww2 range and are really lovely.

Well considering we are ment to be slowing down for the festive break we had a great turn out at the club with 7 games being played.

On the darkest cloth in the room Simon, Martin ad David P jnr finished up their 40K game early and managed to fit in a Lord of the Rings game using the newest set of rules.

Games on the go tomorrow:
I believe young David and Martin and a new member who dropped by last week are doing 40K (tyranids and stuff). JP, David P Snr and Jon B are playing ancients and John M and myself will be playing 10mm WW2. I think Stuart and Jonathan will be along too so if anyone else would like to pop along there should be a chance to join in somewhere.

LotRings Big Battle

A few pictures David P Snr took of a large battle of Lord of the Rings a few weeks ago when I was elsewhere. You can see 1 of David's five (5) mumaks on the rampage!

The battle was set up and played by young David and Martin

The lads have moved on to the Return of the King rules (correct me if I'm wrong?) for their Lord of the Rings battles so the troops now need movement trays and hopefully the lads will get some sand and paint on the soon!

Massive WW2 10mm

I've been pretty distracted with life and work of late but I managed to make my way down to the club to see what was on the go this Saturday.

It appears I have been missing out big time as there have been some spectacular battles on the go (last week the Riders of Rohan were up against 2 elephants!!!).

This week all the guys got together and done a beautiful looking 10mm WW2 game.

Four tables were used filling a third of the room.

The Allied players were JP with his newly finished Americans plus John B and David P jnr with Commonwealth troops

CWC Club News 23.10.10

We had a great day at the club on Saturday with 3 excellent looking games on the go and I didn't bother to take my camera down!

Game 1: Young David and Martin had a huge Lord of the Rings battle with hordes of Urik?(Large Orks with big sticks) and regiments of Riders of Rohan and loads of other figures. Not sure what the result was?

Game 2: Was I think the best looking ACW game I have seen down at the club with David P Senior and John M taking on the might of the North (Lanarkshire) David C.

Game 2: JP and myself fought out a brilliant game of naps. His massed French ranks trying to knock my Prussians from the field. I think JP will agree this was my best tactical game yet. JP had Superior cavalry and I managed to hold up his flanks while concentrating the majority of my troops on his main thrust. It was a hard fought draw which was a very good result for myself. It had a real feel of an 1813 battle with loads of hard fighting and grinding down of troops with no clear victory..

Next week . . .
Jon B and myself will be playing Naps again as he slowly builds up his British force and gets into the rules and JP, John M and David P will be DBMin (Sassanids I think?). I don't know what the rest of the guys will be doing so email around and see what's going on.

I think the Chaos army is 1 of the coolest produced by the Dark Lords at GW

Naps 9.10.10

Jon B and myself had a nice Naps game on Saturday to have another go of the rules as Jon familiarises himself with the GdeB rules.

I was assaulting with my Russians and Prussians

And Jon was the evil Frenchies! We gave Jon 2 batteries of 12lb artillery (1 a guard battery) to make things really interesting and Jon also had 2 regiments of cavalry that would appear at some point rolling for where they would appear.

I set up pretty badly (as per usual) and set about advancing on the French lines.

And Jon shot the s*** out of my battalions as they approached.

This is the 1st time we have had a full guard brigade in battle and they are pretty effective.

Jon borrowed a couple of my dice and they must have been my 2 weighted dice as they never really rolled below a eight all game!

I was just off night shift but we muddled through and it was a fun wee game.

I would think Jon probably held the day with some of my battalions pretty much churned up. A typical 1813 battle with the Allies thinking they had the beating of the Frenchies only to get a bloody nose!

A big thanks to JP for bringing his Frenchies along as an after thought or it would have been Russians against Prussians. I'm looking forward to seeing Jon's British brigade take shape so we can get some Waterloo games on the go!

Lizards and Demons 9.10.10

This is a battle I really wanted to get some good pictures of as this is the 1st time JP's Lizard men have graced the tables of Law but unfortunately mediocrity was the order of the day camera wise.

There was 2 great pieces bits of conversion work on the table with JP making a big dinosaur thing from some spare bits and a toy from a £1 shot

And Stuart making some dead dinos (to dig at JP) also from the £1 shop. Both very convincing.

I thought I had seen pretty much all the figures JP had painted but these guys took me completely by surprise.

An excellent paint job and basing.

I believe these guys are pretty hard dudes? (I remember somebody, sometime, somewhere in the past telling me they where like 1 of the original Fantasy species?) Shoot me down if I am wrong.

Sorry my camera hasn't worked so well since it came back from being repaired, all the pictures are coming out midnight dark despite looking light on the camera?

Anyway they have been blasted with light so are pretty saturated but you can still see the action.

A great turn out this week with 5 games on the go.

And pretty much dominating the table with David P played the Rebs.

Charles, Martin and David P (jnr) fought out a 40k skirmish on Saturday with some nice troops on show.

Charles fielded his Imperial Guard against a much larger force.

Small in number but they put up a brave fight.

A nicely painted command set by Charles (maybe you can give your dad some painting pointers?).

The guys parked their game in the darkest area of the table so not many photo's came out that well.

The Ultramarine force. Maybe you could finish off that base David?

Roman Expansion

The club opened up for business after the September break was a healthy turn out and some cracking games and figures on show.

David P, John M and JP set up a fine looking DBM game. John M is dipping his toe in the water of 15mm DBM so we look forward to seeing a nice army from him in the near future.

David P and John M controlled the swollen ranks of Romans and allies againt JP's Celts.

The guys haven't been doing the army points system for their troops yet so it was just a case of put on the table what you have painted so the odds were stacked against JP who as usual took it in his stride.

JP managed to put up a brave fight against a very large enemy force.

The game had the most 6's rolled I have ever seen (JP's dice) with David rolling nine 6's out of eleven roles at 1 point!!!! With JP rolling his fair share too.

However it was a victory for David and John.

At critical times in the game JP 's large dice rolls deserted him sending his units into chaos (impetuous troops I think it was?) and his army was eventually smashed against the solid walls of the Roman meat grinder! All the guys seemed to enjoy the battle.

And our newest member Jonathan and young Charles played out a good looking Warhammer Fantasy battle.

There were 3 games on the go yesterday (unfortunately my camera is dead and I couldn't get any photo's)

1) JP and Stuart fought out a tasty looking fantasy game with JP's very tidy looking Vampire Counts being crushed my Stuart's undead army. This was a really nice looking battle and deserved to be photographed!

2) Young Martin and David fought out another very nice looking Lord of the Rings battle from Martin's new book (battles of the king or something like that?). Anyway they have all the troops in movement trays and it looked the business.

3) The third game saw John M with a union army shooting David P's Rebs to pieces. This was also a really nice looking battle and deserved to be photographed!

I got my paints out and faffed about a bit and had a wee chat with Jon B for the afternoon.

Next week the club will be closed as various people are away climbing mountains and swimming rivers! So the next date for the club will be Saturday 18th September!!!!

LITTLE GIANTS 19.6.10

This will be the last club update for a while as our holidays begin but hopefully there will be plenty of newly painted figures on show at the club after our break.

This was a big battle between Steven (good guys) and Stuart (big bad guys).

Stuart has 2 of the coolest looking fantasy armies I have seen. (These guys and his demons) I think he also has a skeleton army? but we haven't seen it at the club for a long time.

Steven has taken a long break from painting his Elves (I think he said his dog had eaten his paint brush or something like that?) but he still uses them regularly and that's the main thing!

Don't fancy meeting these guys on a dark night in Carluke. Although I have seen a few women roaming around the shire lately that don't look that much different!

Battle of the Boyne 19.6.10

Well a big surprise this week as both Des and Van der Hannah were free to arrange a large game on Saturday. The Battle of the Boyne was the chosen re-fight for the day with Des (King James) making his claim for the English, Irish and Scottish thrones and Van der Hannah (King William) deposing him.

Des raided his loft once more and made the not so short trip from the mountains down to join us. Great commitment to the club Des!

Each time I hear Des is going to be joining us I start to wonder what little gems he will be bringing with him. This time he managed to find loads of figures I have never ever seen before and amongst them these old Minifigs painted and based to a very nice standard. How long ago did you buy these Des and is that enamel paint by any chance?

More figures I have never seen before at shows or online. By the positions of the sword arm they look to be tabletop figures?

Last minute ACW 19.6.10

I think my brother David and I were the last to return from Wappenshaw on Saturday as we had a little detour to make 1st and everyone was pretty much set up and fighting.

Thankfully John M and JP let us join in their 10mm ACW game and we had a great laugh as well as lots of debated points and general windups.

David took a pretty strong looking Union brigade (with 2 guns because JP needs to paint up a 3rd) and began to advance against my position.

JP is now pretty close to finishing off his 1st Union brigade. Just some work on the bases and they will be done and dusted

When we arrived John M was getting set up to assault JP's position on and around the hill.

To be honest I didn't think he stood a chance against the artillery on the hill. Especially as some of the bases kept sliding down the side of it, perhaps they didn't fancy charging head long into canister?

Anyway John's charges went in and he trounced the guns and carried on for quite a way but left himself pretty exposed. JP struck back and the left wing was held in the balance for quite a time with a good few units leaving the field. Both the guys were very animated and it was fun to see the John's debating the finer points of gamesmanship, is that a word? no matter it was a great laugh anyway!

On our side of the battlefield I was pretty much getting shot up with the guns on the hill (who the hell placed that hill there!) and David's large units as well as making my usualy bad tactical judgements.

Then for some reason David left an open flank! As David had been 1st firing me for the past few rounds I decided to take the chance and go for the charge despite John M's advice.

With some good dice my unit went right through destroying 2 Union battalions in the process and shaking others. YES!!!!!! I thought I had it won and when my unit at David's rear was reformed I decided to charge the shaken Union battalion opposite, that was on a Formation Change order only to see it be able to turn around, form line and fire all in the same move, all from a shaken!!!! (what the **** is that all about?) Anyway a big melee began needing 3 rolls to decide the winner and in the end I was defeated! Great fun though!

Lord of the Rings 19.6.10

A few pictures from a couple of Lord of the Rings games played by the younger members of the club over the past few weeks. The lads seem to pick the darkest part of the hall each week and I have had problems getting good pictures so this is all I have managed to save.

This is the only 1 that turned out sort of ok from this weeks game.

I wish I had managed to get some more pics of this game from last week as it looked the business.

Martins Evil hordes were trying to make a tasty meal out of Kyle and David's good guys.

My nephew's David and Ian picked up 2 bags of WW2 20mm figures from Wappenshaw for £20 each I think? (I think it worked out as a good deal?) There were some nice SHQ, Battlefield and MLR as well as some dross.

It was good to see the lads putting them to good use right away by thinking up a wee game for them fighting some zombie/skeleton type figures that were also in the bags.

I have to say I was pretty impressed that they filled their extra time after their main game with this. Possibly some potential rule authors for the future?

Kyle if you or your dad are reading this David and Martin have arranged another game for next Saturday 26th June if you would like to join them. I can't remember if they will be playing 40K or Lord of the Rings though?

Now here is dedication for you! Last week at the club we were chatting about the up coming Wappenshaw show and basically we were all going. So it looked like the club would be off on Saturday 19th. Well Stuart is surprised us all with his commitment to the club as he not only was going to be attending Wappenshaw (straight in the door at 10am) he had also arranged a game with young Stephen for 12pm. Pretty impressive stuff I am sure you will agree. I only seen Stuart for a second, at least I think it was Stuart? (it was hard to tell as my vision was blurred as he was moving so fast darting from stand to stand picking up what bargains he could before he had make his speedy exit). Anyway the gist of it is Stuart inspired us and we all pretty much made it back to Law for a game or 2 and it turned out to be a great day!

Stuart's evil beast's took on young Stephens forces of good and it looked to be a very hard fought game.

These are my personal favourite out of Stuarts Evil army. Fantastic paint job!!!

Although this is a duff photo (usually destined for the bin) I kept it as I think it worked out pretty well with the forces of good getting some extra help from a divine light cast from the heavens.

It even looks like some of the winged demons are trying to protect their eyes from the light!

I believe Stuart had to convert these figures?

I can remember him asking us a few weeks ago if we had and spare wings!!! Strangely enough none of us had any so Stuart had to find another solution and where ever he got these ones they do the job. It would be good to hear how you did your conversions Stuart and what wings you used!

Anyway it was a pretty mad battle that went on for quite some time and I think in the end they called it a draw!

CWC News Saturday 19.6.10

Wow, excellent day at the club today. The majority of us made it through to Wappenshaw 1st thing to pick up our goodies from various traders (myself, I had some shiny stuff on order from Pendraken and Warbases with some extra bits from Central Wargaming).

Then it was back to the club for some brilliant games!!!
Von Hannah and Des re fought the Battle of the Boyne (a really colourful looking game) and Young Stephen and Stuart rattled out a pretty big fantasy game with the High Elves against Demons. Game three was with the young lads Craig, Martin and my nephews David and Ian with lord of the Rings. The killer game was the battle I was involved in (JP, John M, David P and myself) a 10mm ACW battle that was a real cracker right to the end swaying back and worth with loads of debate. Pictures to follow!!!

Just a wee note to say the club will be on today!!!!!

Most of us will be going down to Wappenshaw 1st thing then up to the club for 12(ish) for some gaming and showing off our new toys.

10mm ACW!!!! 12.6.10

Well here we go again with another project for the club but I guess it was just a matter of time! Another good turnout for the club this weekend with a few being unable to attend we still managed to get 3 good sized games on the go and a new member to boot, a very big welcome to young Kyle (maybe we will be able to tempt your dad along sometime too???)

The lads at the club (and also Motherwell club) have been playing ACW in 15mm with the JRII rules for a good few years now and when John M and John B started coming along to the club with their 10mm ACW we all started looking at them with the sparkling eyes of a little kitten checking out goldfish swimming around their round bowl. Very interested and wanting to get our paws on them but not quite sure if we wanted to get dripping wet

Well the inevitable has happened, John M and JP have been discussing the basing of the 10mm for JRII (results shown left) and have done some games both at the club and up in a damp cave somewhere between Larkhall and Strathaven Electricity there is not but experimental wargamers there are by the shed load!!!!

And now we have all taken the plunge!

As well as John M's Confederate units well on the way to being rebased he has a Union brigade on the go too.

The visual effect is very much the same as the 15mm figures but with the smaller footprint allows much more room to maneuver while getting more eye candy onto the tabletop

David P and myself will be picking up both Confederate and Union army packs this weekend at Wappenshaw!

so hopefully we will have some of our own troops on the table soon.

David C has also shown an interest in the 10mm ACW (Pendraken 10mm ACW by John M shown left) so we should be able to rustle up some pretty big battles soon enough. We may even start some of those campaigns that are often talked about! Who knows?

CWC News Saturday 12.6.10

CWC News Saturday 5.6.10

Well we had a very good day at the club with four games on the go. Muggins here forgot to pack his camera but still we had a great time of it and a few of our long lost members made a welcome showing. So not a bad turnout at all considering a few guys had other commitments.

Young David and Martin had 2 excellently set out Lord of the Rings games on the go and they definitely looked like a lot of fun.

Jamie D, David W and young Craig got stuck into Space Hulk (the new version). This was 1 of my favourite games at school.

Myself and JP fought a brilliant Napoleonic battle with my Russians trying to hold a crossroads against his Frenchies. Really great fun with the battle rocking back and forth. JP broke 2 squares and destroyed a brigade as well as my big 6 gun battery and I managed to capture 1 of his Generals and put 1 of his brigades to flight (2nd time this worked to my opponents advantage) and chase his cuirassier regiment of the table. We were well rusty with the rules and we called it a draw at the end.

John M and David C fought Chumbawumba (ACW battle Chickamauga to those in the know) in 15mm with the JR2 rules and it looked the business. There was a fair bit of debate about 1 critical point and I think some further investigation will be required to sort it out. I believe they fought to a draw?

All in all a pleasant days gaming.

Another game on the go this week was between Stuart and JP a little and large battle with Stuart's Giants fighting JP's Dwarf's

The big dudes as would be expected got stuck in right away.

Taking the fight to the little chaps.

However the miniature vikings were more than a match for their overgrown opponents.

Once they had taking care of this big thug victory was within their grasp.

Despite the best efforts of the big bungling monstrosities the Dwarfs won the day, a true David and Goliath encounter!

There is a real story to be told and I'm here to put the record straight and it's not the one you all know written by that J.R. what's his name? You know the guy, the one off the adverts who wrote Fly Fishing I know it was some time ago but I really should remember anyway back to my story.

The evil guys they aren't all that bad!

The Goblins and Trolls: well they naturally shy away from the light as you know because their eye sight is goosed from working for THE MAN down the pits for like forever! And besides they don't earn enough for sun block so no wonder they get pi**ed off!

The Orc's and Uruk-hai: So they like a bit of man flesh now and again! I ask you what harm are they doing? If truth be told it keeps the streets quiet at night and there's no yobs mugging old ladies around their neighbourhoods!!!

Things were just fine in Middle Earth . . . The Hobbits were quite happy getting smashed out of their tiny skulls on ale (and mushrooms, yeah Mr T left that 1 out of the books) every evening.

And the Forces of Evil (well we call them Evil) were contented doing a bit of logging (removing some very grumpy old trees) and a bit of massed rambling (you know the German way, like back in the late 30's early 40's).

I think you'll agree a great bunch of guys into outdoor pursuits. Real warm blooded nature lovers!

Then along come those Artsy-Fartsy Hollywood writer and director types with their sabre rattling and war mongering . . . anything to make a movie or 3 if you ask me!!!

Ooooooh a big scary eye! Yeah, yeah we've heard it all before, Weapons of Mass Destruction blah, blah!

Next thing you know and Middle Earth is knee deep in actors!!! With their cafe lattes, veggie burgers, and votes for women!!!

What about that Gandalf character he's got more twists and turns than a roller coaster! (grey then white what's that all about?) and have you seen the way he stares at young Peregrin Took in the last film, seriously dodgy!

And look who shows up next . . . The Rohan King - Old Geeez a Job himself! Away back to Hollywood Yosser you've become a big Jessie. We remember when you needed a job to feed yer bairns and you were the dad out of Restless Natives . . . when you were trying to prick a wart in yer boys finger whey A Big Needle See!!!

So it's official . . .
The painting of our big old ACW's has begun!

I do believe David P is now sold on the idea of Army Painter!!!

This lot of Rebs are from David's collection.

What can I say? they look outstanding!

And all painted in a few days.

We had talked about trying The Army Painter out for a few months after Chris let us in on the not so well kept secret that had swept the wargaming nation!

And boy are we glad he did!!!

David had never tried 28mm historical figures up until a couple of weeks ago and now he is planning on buying Napoleonics!!!

And these are my Berdan's with just the armypainter brushed on and a spray varnish.

I think I'll give them a little highlight after all since it turned out so well on David's Rebs then a little matt varnish and I'm done. To be honest they are fine for the gaming table now

And what about you JP are you sold on the Army Painter yet?

Nah! cause you paint like a Kalashnikov anyway (that's why we've had to turn to extreme measures just to keep up!!!)

You've done a great job on these guys JP.

However I do see 1 major problem!

Your going to need a bigger baking tray!!!

note: for the people outwith the club JP's other hobby is knocking merry hell out of old baking trays to terrify the neighbours! He does put them to good use thought.

Napoleonic Bloodbath

Last week work wise was a killer for myself with a whole load of nights straight and I didn't get the chance to arrange a game for Saturday. As luck would have it my nephew David was at a loose end without anyone to play either so we agreed on a wee game of Naps.

We decided not to use any cavalry just to keep it simple and have our forces pretty much even with both of us going for it. As luck would have it just as we were setting up John M and his lad Martin popped in and joined us for the fight. The boys being young and full of fighting spirit decided they would attack leaving us old guys to sit on our portly behinds and wait for the assault. Some of the French force decided not to make the trip from Coulter to Law so a couple of battalions of Prussians joined them on the field of battle.

. . . you would think I would know what I was doing with them by now!

As you will see from this picture I clearly don't! Marching them in column, opening their flank to the advancing French onslaught.

I very generously past my newly finished Old Glory Russians on to John M for their 1st battle on club soil. I was like an expectant father, how would they deal with the pressure 1st time out? Only time would tell!!

However I had confidence in John as he is very good at pushing wee men around a table.

And he did have these babies pointed at the enemy. Pretty soon the Frenchies would be picking lead out of their teeth!

For a man who claims to have no interest in Napoleonics what so ever John seemed to be having a whole lot of fun with his wee Russian men! Just give it time and I am sure we will see an army of some German state allied to Napoleon painted by john in this very blog soon enough, watch this space!

John employed some mind games over young Martin sending out a soul Russian battalion up the right to engage the flank of the oncoming French.

Here John! the guys with the yellow pom poms are meant to go at the other side of the battalion. What were you thinking man? You could have gotten your troops all messed up in the head!

Anyway my Johnny Reb flashbacks meant that David caught my battalion in the flank but thankfully he rolled low and I rolled high and they retreated. After being followed up by his troops I managed to get my guns limbered and out of harms way.

Out of shot on the left I managed to duff up his advancing columns and turn in time to start shooting lumps out of the now unformed French battalion.

And as young David charged in with his 2 battalions in the centre his jammy uncle (me) rolled a double 6!!! faltering one of the units and after a melee with the other was able to reinforce with the battalion in column at right!

IN YOUR FACE FRENCHY, IN YOUR FACE!

I would like to point out that I am in no way Anti-French! Some of my best friends are French, well when I say some I mean 1. Actually come to think of it I don't know any French people but my wife has a friend who lives in France, or is it Belgium? No matter I'm sure on the whole the French people are lovely and they do make some mighty fine cheese and wine!

Right enough of my ramblings back to thrashing the garlic eaters . . .

In the Allied centre young Martin for some reason marched his battalions straight at his dads 6 gun battery and with a couple of low rolls to start with John started rolling 11's. As you would guess the French attack came to a complete halt!

So basically that was that, young Martins brigade was massacred and my high dice all game (along with my magnificent tactical mind ;-) put pay to young David's brigade.

A victory for the Allies and more importantly a glorious start to my new Russians battlefield career. We had a great laugh and the boys were good sports with not a tear shed. When John and I were getting all worked up about our double 6's and victory the boys were cheerfully discussing next weeks Lord of the Rings game they will be having and consul games. The boys have got their priorities right!

A big thanks to Robert T who dropped by on Saturday and ended up helping us out with the rules!

25mm to be Exact!
or ar they 28mm? I don't know, anyway they look Greeeeeeeat!

As I mentioned last week a few of us at the club had taken an interest in the 25/28mm Perry ACW figures and I personally new it wouldn't be long before 1 of us went and bought a sh** load of them (my money was on my brother David P!!!)

Sure enough after catching the bug with his 1st box David went out and bought the brigade pack (plus some very nice extras)

I benefited from this deal with a box and a command set for myself, Bonzer!!!

Big Old Naps

Des was kind enough to bring along his old 28mm Naps for Chris and I to have a go with the Rank and File rules last Saturday.

I must admit it was a nice change from the more intense Naps rules and we had great fun. I was the French with slightly more troops and Chris was the Brits, Chris guided us through the rounds no problem.

(Here Des what about this as a handle for yourself for the wargaming forums! - DEsMONd Cool or what?)

The rules were really smooth and very relaxing to play.

General de Brigade is the rules I usually play and although I enjoy them very much we can be pushed for time at the club to get a game finished before packing up time.

It was a close run thing

However in the end the French finally broke through.

A nice wee test for our 1st game with no artillery or cavalry keeping things simple.

Well things were looking a wee bit better this Saturday with numbers picking up a little with a couple of games on the go. It was good to see the usual crowd in attendance with Des making a 260 mile round trip to support the club. (He says he was here for the wargaming but I have it on good authority he was actually down doing a bit of cattle rustling!)

Most of us will be aware of the resent down turn in numbers at the club by now. Stuart has sent out an email with some ideas to help keep our club running:

Dear All
On Saturday 13th of March the club is on BUT I require notification of who will be attending so that if the need arises I can cancel. I know that John Preston and John Marshall wish to attend so please let me know.Now an update re the current situation at Carluke Wargames Club. Only 2 people, apart from myself, turned up on Saturday 6th March (David Wood and John Marshall.) At 1230 I decided to cancel the day and paid the £11.05 for the 5hrs we had booked. This amount came out of my own pocket and will be re imbursed from the clubs funds which are rapidly going. We currently need 6 members a week for the club to break even but at the times we dont. I can see the future of the club, and it has over 20yrs history behind it, slowly dwindling.
I am fully aware that the vast majority of members, myself included, cannot attend every Saturday due to work and family commitments but we must look to the future of our past time within out community. Either that or travel a larger distance to a club that does not play your system, or does not meet when you are free. So if you cant attend the club on a particular Saturday please give me notice incase I have to cancel.
Maybe the club needs some attraction for members to attend and to attract new ones. Something to capture their imagination with a minimum expenditure.
In the past year, a couple of new gaming rulesets have been introduced to the club Johnny Reb - American Civil War combat and Gereral De Brigade - Napoleonic warfare. These have both been well met by adult members but sadly have not captured the attention of our younger members so we have to look to them for the furure of the club.
I wish to introduce, in the near future, a couple of new gaming systems into the club "Uncharted Seas", "Imperial Commander" and "Hordes Of The Things". All these systems are quite cheap to buy all about £25 to £30 or so for a complete force (I have the rules for each and can copy them). Paul Provan and I are both currently looking for a rule set for Zombie Combat - Resident Evil style - in the modern period (Paul has kindly purchased and painted the figs.)
Imperial Commander is built around a range of 15mm Sci Fi figures and are designed to give a fast, skillful game when using around 50 figures a side.
Uncharted Seas is Fantasy naval combat produced by Spartan Games
Hordes of The Things 15mm fantasy combat similar to DBA
The only options I can see for the clubs future are:
1) A membership fee
2) A higher weekly sub.
3) Meeting twice a month
4) Meeting once a month
If anyone has any suggestions for the club, please let me know and I will forward on to all and will assist if I can. I dont run the club, I am just keeping a great hobby that we all enjoy running within an easy distance for us all.
Remember. We have all put so much time and effort into our hobby that it would be a shame for it to go to waste.

ACW 20.2.10

We had another low turnout this Saturday (6 and 1 visitor) and it led to a fair bit of discussion about the club's future. The past few weeks attendance has crashed at times falling short of the 6 people needed to break even. It's true we are a small club in an isolated area and we are a very diverse group.

The younger lads eventually start to drift away into other activities as wargaming becomes uncool and us older guys have frustrating job patterns as well as family responsibilities. We are all in the same boat and also we all get different things out of the club some will drive miles to get their gaming fix and me I suppose I like to see my freshly painted men moving about the table while sharing a laugh with like minded folk. We are also struck with the same problems smaller football teams are (We have Hamilton, Motherwell, Airdrie and Albion Rovers all within a short drive of each other with quite small attendance yet because of history they will not join together and we have Motherwell Wargaming close by with a small turnout).

I started this blog to hopefully help keep the interest amongst our guys and make us aware what each other had planned but we have not been the best at arranging games with a lot of it last minute stuff. A few times people have turned up with armies hoping for a game and they were disappointed (A big apology to Von Hannah who went and got an army looked out last week and almost know one was available). Anyway, the next couple of months I'll keep posting and emailing everyone and hopefully our numbers will pick up and if not as the guys were saying it might be back to garages and lofts. A big thank you to the guys who have come along from other clubs over the past year not only giving us some excellent games but have helped the club keep going.

Anyway enough of the serious stuff: We had another ACW game on the go with JP, Billy S, young Thomas and myself, Billy was a late arrival (travelling up from Glasgow, a real wargaming trooper!) and he took over the Rebs left.

It was a confusin old day for myself. Last time I played was GdB naps and you struggle to get flank fire on the enemy and JReb II is the complete opposite.

So I put a cunning plan into operation (I thought it was a great idea) and I opened up a slight flank and lost a gun. My unit was untouched otherwise however I was advises to disengage and fall back to regroup. Despite JP's criticism it proved to be the right move. I'm lost with ACW at the moment as everyone has a different idea of what you should do, 1 player might think your idea is nuts while the other agrees, you would have to be a mind reader and your units are so fragile. It's fair to say my head was pickled on Saturday (and not from the bottled of Red wine my wife and I shared the night before!).

Meanwhile Thomas's unit began to break up and Billy S went on the offensive.

I set out my new line of defence.

JP cautiously moved forward towards me.

While at the same time his right flank began to totally disappear and decided the only option left was to retire. I managed to take a good number of casualties off his forward unit before they moved out of range.

A victory for the Rebels was declared.

And JP accepted defeat graciously.

Good against Evil

And really terrifying they looked too. They will look even more terrifying when they are actually finished!

So the 2 armies met had a bit of a fight. POW, KABLAM, WHAMO etc, etc . . .

The good guys dragon tried to catch some of the baddies in the open . . . more fickting . . .

And there was a big showdown with the evil twins getting the better of the forces of light.

In the end a victory for the forces of evil . . . Kind of like real life to be honest . . .

Rebel in the Room 3

The Battle : Us Union lads stepped out the room for a little con flab about tactics leaving the Rebs to do the same. We had decided on an offensive in the centre (JP and myself attacking the new player John M and inexperienced General Z) while David C and Jon B (when he arrived) would hold the flanks solid.

1st off we all begun to move our troops into Position.

David C advanced into the woods on our left in extended line to await the predicted assault from Billy S.

Good news from our right flank, Jon B's troops had begun to arrive with the General just finishing of the rest of his egg sandwich. Our flanks were secure.

In his army 2 newly finished units of Minifigs Turks I picked up years ago! JP saved them from the lead pile and turned them into very convincing Zouaves!

I edged forward in column for speed to try and get a good position before forming line.

But what was this?
A unit of General Zebadiah's Texans still stinking of p*** and moonshine from the night before heads a thumping to the beat of the drums started to advance alone towards my Union brigade.

With cries of "Madness" and "Go for it if you want to throw away your whole brigade at the start of the game" from his fellow Rebel Generals and sighs of disbelief from the rest of us (plus the odd word or 2 of French from JP) Zebedee ordered his unit to Charge!

A little side note : General Zebadiah arrived late and promptly announced he would be leaving at 3pm (we play till 5pm) so I really should have seen this 1 coming!!

For those of you who are easily disturbed or faint at the sight of blood please look away now!!

Both of us did our rolling as regards the charge and all were past, the sound of metal grinding and groans of frustration filled the room as the guys worked through the charge procedure for the 1st time in a very long while. Zebedee rolled some of the highest dice I have ever seen him roll and my dice were average.

Amazingly I didn't do enough damage to stop him and not only my artillery but 1 of my infantry units were sent into full rout!!!

Ahhh, it's enough to make a grown man cry :-( I couldn't believe it, in a few minutes from the start of the game the Union advance had been dealt a severe blow. This was going to be a very long day!

Meanwhile the Confederate columns began to advance shielded by tree cover and a kitkat bar?

Rebel in the Room 2

Some pictures showing the setup for our big game just before Christmas. A very rusty affair with a couple of the guys coming out of ACW retirement and a few new boys to the Johnny Reb II rules too, eight of us braved the snowy weather (2 of us making it along after Christmas nights out!) not a bad turn out for the last Saturday before Christmas.

JP setting up for us as usual, the only man I know who carries an old snooker table baize in the boot of his car and a box of chalk in his back pocket while out shopping just in case he bumps into a fellow wargamer!

Ahh the Saturday afternoon rituals, tea, coffee, biscuits and crisps. Just incase we starve to death during the long hard game!

I was on the right of centre in a pretty exposed position awaiting the arrival of Jon B who had sent a telegram (text actually, that he had just left the house, cockney rhyming slang for he had actually just rolled out of bed and was about to tuck into some sausage, bacon and egg butties before jumping in the shower!) The main thing was he was going to make it!!

The Confederates : basically set up in a big line right across from us. This was going to be a stand up fight just like our first games of Naps before we discovered tactics.

On the left of centre was General Zebadiah Billy Bob Livingstone "Zebedee" to his friends! (we will hear more about his magical exploits in the following reports of the battle). To the right of centre was John M an experienced ACW player in 10mm. John M and Jon B do most of their wargaming in 10mm so we had to familiarize the guys with the larger 15mm figures (kind of like Father Ted explaining to Father Dougal about the toy cows being small and the ones in the field being Farrrr Awwway) but the guys are fast learners and the size issue didn't cause to many problems.

Finally on the far right of the rebel line was Billy S the most experienced ACW play of us all, a veteran of many a campaign coming out of retirement to help the South in their momentous struggle for Independence.

Rebel in the Room 1

So here we are in a new year at the club (a belated Happy New Year to all) and it's been a slow start with the mountains of snow everywhere and real life commitments taking precedent but the numbers are starting to pick up again.

American Civil War has been the poison of choice from our last meeting before the Christmas break (with 8 of us in a big shoot out) right through to last Saturday.

The pictures this time are from the big game pre Christmas that I should have had posted long ago but to be honest I couldn't be arsed due to too much work.

So I thought I'd start off with some closeups of the troops on display. The 1st 3 pictures are from David P's collection of Yankees and Rebels.

Some rebels from Billy S a very welcome new arrival at the CWClub, a seasoned wargamer who has been helping some of the less experienced ACW players (namely me) get the hang of the Johnny Reb rules.

One thing interesting about wargaming is how everyone has their own style of painting and basing figures and the more people you meet at the club the more ideas you get for yourself.

And a little bit more eye candy for the table.

And to finish off some more of David P's Rebs. JP and David C also had really nice figures with them that will be seen in the main blog but unfortunately I was (again) just off nightshift and despite taking loads of pics most were junk and had to be trashed.

So in total we have played 3 ACW games in the past few weeks with some of us playing a couple more and next Saturday we are going to go for it again. I must say I have enjoyed the little buzz we've had around the club for ACW at the moment but it hasn't stopped me getting humped most of the time. Last Saturday was the worst of all (big apologies to my partner in crime Robert T) who thankfully wasn't paying for his petrol on the day! However it has to be said I am just learning and the Johnny Reb rules are a cruel mistress that don't leave much margin for error. If you mess up in any way it's "Goodnight Vienna" (added to that my dice seem terrified when the big lads in the room, must be all those negative waves dude :-)

Well it's finally that time of year again and the club is of course closed through the festive season. Stuart asked me to let everyone know that the club starts up again on the 9th of January 2010.

Thanks to everyone for making the club a big success and great fun especially after the long lay off through the summer when we had to search out a new home.

Wolves in the Snow

I know technically there is no snow in these pictures but there was a hell of a lot of it outside. Besides we are wargamers so try and use your imagination!

Well it was great to see the youngsters made it along to the club despite the fields of snow. Even more impressive considering some of them come from places were salt hasn't been invented yet!

So the battle of the day was a very nice looking 40K battle with Space Wolves, Black Templars and Ultramarines up against the mighty Necrons.

Some beautiful looking kit on display, take a look at this baby! Space Wolves Rock Grrr!!!!!

Not sure how this 1 was played out as I had just finished night shift and was bogged down in a bloody ACW battle but it looked the business!

Young Craig had his mad looking Tardis type thing (that I believe is pretty indestructible) but Young Thomas and Martin had some powerful Imperial Armour on the table.

Some flying Necron dudes. Apologies for the picture quality (for some reason each time I take pictures of Craig's Necrons barely a single closeup comes out clear?) I put it down to fear as they do look terrifying!

To finish off here is 1 for the future, I look forward to seeing it finished off. No pressure Jon but pull the finger out and finish it ;-)

Necron Invasion 40K

Every now and then someone comes along to the club with some figures or an army that you haven't seen painted up before and the WOW factor hits you, and this Saturday Stuart appeared with these babies!

Even more unexpected as Stuart was going to be playing a game of Warhammer Fantasy and his opponent didn't appear. However as young Craig was without an opponent Stuart stepped in and nipped home to get his Necrons.

Look at this guy, big Arnie would be right at home amongst these lads!

I knew Stuart had painted up some Necron Warriors for young Craig and this is how they turned out.

I guess these will be the foot soldiers of the army and Stuart has found a source for some excellent bases. Same place Stuart got his lava bases for his Demons

In mass they are 1 of the nicest 40K armies I have seen.

No idea what these little characters are but they are really nice.

Lessons in Defeat

The second DBM battle on the go on Saturday was the Sassanids controlled by myself and a Greek army controlled by Robert. It was a replay of a game a few weeks prior with the addition of some rules we had overlooked.

I already new I would be up against it as the Sassanids last time were well and truly humped but I wanted to try it out with the exact same army as last time to see if there would be any change in the outcome. And the answer was a big fat NO!

Despite looking like a rather taste army the Sassanids don't appear to be a good army to fight massed spears.

I'm new to DBM and it is well worth getting beat to see the deficiency's of each troop type as well as their positive aspects.

The little white sheeted dudes doing what they do best. Making up the numbers!

Lesson 1 : I now know what the point of the little white dudes are (and it's not just to get massacred) they increase your numbers in each unit so you can take more casualties.

Lesson 2 : Elephants although pretty have their time and place and it is not fighting Greek spears and pikes!

Lesson 3 : I need to build a couple of DBM armies of my own that have different abilities that can fight different opponents.

Lesson 4 : Greeks are pretty tough opponents especially with superior troops spread amongst them.

Robert and I managed to squeeze in 2 games on the Saturday afternoon. The 1st was a crushing defeat however the 2nd I decided to ditch the elephants and set out a bit better. and used the little white dudes properly.

However although I wasn't getting massacred in droves neither could I make the breakthrough.
The Greeks were just too damn strong and even when I was rolling 6's my opponent rolled just enough to save them or the superior troop factor would save them. In the same vain my cavalry would flee then return to the battle and it took a long time for Robert to kill enough of my guys for the game to be over.

In the end all I was killing was the Greek skirmishers.

So 2 defeats on the trot but I feel I learnt a lot and would like to learn more about the flank march that can get the cavalry behind the Greek troops.

It's all Greek to Me!

This is the 1st of 2 DBM battle reports of the day with a Greek army in action. Actually probably Macedonian but it's roughly the same period and I'm sure there were Greek mercenaries in the army?

For a nice change JP brought along a different army to fight David's growing Roman legions.

And very colourful it looked too.

As well as all the spears and pikes JP had included 2 nice efelumps.

David's Romans with skirmishers out front ready to do battle with the enemy.

And his new Roman auxiliaries that I persuaded him to buy up at Kirriemuir.

The sabre rattling begins.

Combat breaks out.

Davids 1st attempt at taking down the efelumps that ended in failure.

Davids 2nd attempt at taking down John's Elephant and this time successful.

In the end it was a victory for John. A very nice looking DBM battle.

Imperial Shoot-em-up

Well it was a late start for the Johns today, I think a warhammer fantasy game was planned but some confusion on times and what to bring ended in a 4oK battle with the good guys versus, well the good guys! Personally I was a little glad as I got to see a Bane Blade all painted up. A rare site outside of a Games Workshop Codex or Website.

Young Martin (assisted by John) was in control of the Imperial Guard dudes.

While Thomas the baby face (assisted by Jon) was in charge of (my personal favourite) the Black Templar's.

I don't know much about what happened in the game as I was busy getting humiliated on another table but it sounded really fun. Here is the Black Templar's Champion painted by Thomas.
